Arbor House

4691 SQUARE FEET

The Challenge
While it was decided early on to raze the original house on this waterfront lot, it was important to recognize the long established prestigious neighborhood. The young family of 6 enjoyed natural light, ventilation and outdoor activities yet valued their privacy.

The Result
The solution involved an organization of the interior spaces around an interior 2 ½ story atrium ringed with operable clerestory windows at the top. Outside, 2 sets of double garages create a motor court that doubles as a bounded paved play space. Poured concrete columns rise to support the atrium ceiling in 2 rows and evenly spaced from the exterior to interior in tree-like form as homage to the majestic oak lining the approaching street.
